The research associate will provide key support in performing key field and lab related activities at the Algona, Iowa, Corn Research Center to produce superior inbreds and hybrids which support the local production zone. The position helps organize and conduct daily operations associated with the development and evaluation programs at the research center and various outlying locations managed by the Algona center. In addition, this position may include hiring, training, and supervisory responsibilities for designated temporary and seasonal employees at the Algona center.
Support all phases of corn research field and lab operations at the Algona center.
Collaborate with experiment and location mangers to create and upload experiments, entry lists, and location attributes
Supervise and work with part-time and seasonal employees making sure they are trained properly and complete their tasks correctly and accurately.
Job requires occasional travel and extended hours with weekend work during seasonal workload peaks.
Assist with seed packaging and organizing for the center and ship seed to other centers during the spring and fall time periods.
Work with other team members to evaluate and take notes using hand held computer devices at yield trial locations, review and uploading the data into Pioneer computer programs according to protocols.
Gain competencies with various research field, lab, and data collection equipment as well as necessary computer and data collection hardware and software.
Assess labor needs and time to complete processes by using independent judgment and decision making to ensure completion of tasks in an efficient, effective and in a safe manner.
Collaborate with experiment and location mangers to create and upload experiments, entry lists, and location attributes.
Manage data from field collection through central storage including data quality checking and classification.
Communicate with outside vendors, as needed, to secure needed inputs and carry out essential field, lab, and data collection operations.
Ensures all operations are completed in a timely, safe, and cost effective manner.
Serve on teams appropriate to specific projects.
Provide occasional support at other research centers and winter nursery sites.
B.S. degree in agronomy, plant breeding, agricultural systems, or any other related fields such as biology, genetics, etc.,and with 2-4 years of industry related experience required, or equivalent amounts of relevant education and experience. Master''s degree in related field and 0-2 years of related experience preferred.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required along with the ability to work in a fast paced environment.
Experience with field research, row-crop production, and related equipment operation preferred but not required.
Ability to maintain organization and coherency of thought process while working on multiple projects during the day.
Demonstrate leadership skills and take responsibility by teaching, being self-motivated, and working well with others to foster team building, make decisions, and effectively solve problems.
Excellent personal interaction skills enhancing a good working environment and effectively developing strong internal and external working relationships with a diverse group of people.
Experience with standard computer software packages such as Excel, Word, and Power Point is beneficial for operation of data collection programs and process management.

Physical requirements include: ability to work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions, standing for long periods of time, and the ability to lift 50 pounds.
Possess or ability to obtain an Iowa commercial applicators pesticide license.
Possess or ability to obtain a CDL if needed.
